Tesla vs Volvo — Which Should You Lease in 2026?

2 February 2026 · Johan Sandberg · Läs på svenska

Tesla and Volvo are two of the most sought-after car brands in Sweden, and when it comes to leasing an electric car, they often end up in the same comparison. We're putting the Tesla Model Y against the Volvo EX40 (formerly C40 Recharge) in an honest head-to-head breakdown.

Price and Monthly Cost

Price is often the deciding factor, and there's a clear difference here:

  • Tesla Model Y Long Range:: From approx. SEK 4,490/month (36 months, 15,000 km/year)
  • Volvo EX40 Twin Motor:: From approx. SEK 5,290/month (36 months, 15,000 km/year)
  • Tesla is roughly SEK 800 cheaper per month, which adds up to nearly SEK 29,000 over a three-year lease. That's a significant difference.

    Range and Charging

  • Tesla Model Y:: 455–533 km WLTP. Supercharger network with over 300 charging points in Sweden.
  • Volvo EX40:: 400–476 km WLTP. Uses the CCS standard with access to all public chargers.
  • Tesla has the edge in both range and its own charging network, but Volvo has significantly improved its charging speed.

    Interior and Build Quality

    This is where Volvo wins clearly. Scandinavian design, premium materials, and the renowned Volvo comfort make the EX40 a pleasant car to spend time in. Tesla Model Y takes a more minimalist approach with its single central screen — an aesthetic that doesn't appeal to everyone.

  • Volvo:: Premium interior, Google-based infotainment, outstanding seats
  • Tesla:: Minimalist, large screen, simple but less luxurious
  • Safety

    Both cars have received five stars in Euro NCAP. However, Volvo traditionally holds a stronger position in safety and offers more active safety systems as standard.

  • Volvo:: Pilot Assist, blind spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert — all standard
  • Tesla:: Autopilot as standard, Full Self-Driving available as an option (with limitations in Sweden)
  • Service and Maintenance

    Volvo has a well-established service network across Sweden with personal contact. Tesla relies more on mobile service and booking through its app. Both work, but the experiences differ.

    Residual Value

    With private leasing, you never own the car, but residual value affects your monthly cost. Tesla has historically had fluctuating residual values due to frequent price changes. Volvo has more stable pricing.

    Who Should Choose What?

    **Choose Tesla Model Y if you:**

  • Want the lowest possible monthly cost
  • Prioritise range and fast Supercharger access
  • Love tech and minimalist design
  • Drive long distances frequently
  • **Choose Volvo EX40 if you:**

  • Value premium feel and quality materials
  • Want an established Swedish service network
  • Prioritise maximum safety features as standard
  • Prefer Scandinavian design
  • Conclusion

    There's no objectively right answer — it depends entirely on your priorities. Tesla wins on price and range, while Volvo takes the lead on build quality and service. Either way, you'll be leasing an excellent electric car.
