New EV Subsidy — What Does It Mean?
The government has decided on a new, targeted EV subsidy that took effect on March 18, 2026. The subsidy is administered by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and aims to make electric vehicles more accessible — especially for households with lower incomes in municipalities with limited public transport.
The total amount can be up to 64,800 SEK, distributed as:
- Initial bonus: 18,000 SEK at purchase
- Monthly support: 1,300 SEK/month for 36 months
Who Can Apply?
The subsidy is income-tested and geographically targeted:
- Households with incomes up to about 80% of median income
- You must be registered in a municipality with limited public transport
- Applies to purchase of new EV priced between 64,800 and 450,000 SEK
- Only pure EVs — not hybrids
- You can apply up to 2 months after purchase
Does It Apply to Private Leasing?
The important question for private leasing customers: the subsidy is primarily aimed at purchases, not leasing. You must be registered as owner in the vehicle registry. With private leasing, the leasing company owns the car, so the subsidy normally does not apply directly to private leasing.
However, leasing companies that qualify themselves may be able to transfer the support to lower monthly costs. Contact your leasing provider for current terms.
If you're considering purchasing an EV instead and qualify, the subsidy could make owning an EV cheaper than private leasing it — especially combined with low interest rates.
Cheapest EVs in Private Leasing Now
Regardless of whether the subsidy applies to you, comparing private leasing prices is worthwhile. Here are some of the cheapest EVs in private leasing right now:
- MG S5 — from about 2,995 SEK/month
- Citroën ë-C3 — from about 3,190 SEK/month
- Kia EV2 — new budget model from Kia
- BYD ATTO 3 — from about 3,495 SEK/month

Combine with Charging Box Subsidy
If you qualify for the EV subsidy, you can likely also apply for the "Charge Your Car" subsidy through the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency for home charging box installation. The combination of EV subsidy + charging box subsidy can make the switch to EV significantly cheaper.
Summary
The new 2026 EV subsidy is good news for all considering switching to EV. Although it doesn't directly apply to private leasing, it signals that the government continues supporting electrification — and that ultimately pushes down leasing prices for EVs.
